The Glucose Test

Crap, I failed it.
I was so sure I would pass it, too confident even. The doctor wrote on the referral no fasting [which, by the way, according to the nurse who took my blood will cause other tests (I think she said the B12) to give a false answer. urg!], anyway as I am not an early riser and only eat fruit in the morning (no connection to pregnancy), and after a discussion on a message board about having a breakfast before, I went ahead and had an apple before so that it won't be too low. Yes, that confident I was. I mean I should have known with the sweet tooth I have.
So now I have to do the 100g (or the 3 hours. joy) test. And I actually don't know how it works. I mean I know the technicalities of the test - this one is a fasting one and I have to go there early so I can be there three hours and every hour they'll draw blood and I assume I need a referral (since I needed one for the 50g). But as I am right now between doctors, haven't made an appointment to a new doctor (or even tried to find one. I could go back to the dr I went to before, except it is quite a ride), I don't know who can give me a referral. Maybe the GP? And do I have to do it now now or can it wait? (o.k I think at least an answer to that one I'll be able to get tomorrow when I meet the nurse to start the monitoring [up till now it was all done at the doctors office]).
I'm sorry to be whining about a little test I have to do, when overall not only am I pregnant, but am enjoying this time (not even morning sickness). It feels unfair of me. But I am scared that if I do have pregnancy diabetes, that it will "rob" me of the birth I want [the two things I really really really don't want are a c-section and an induction].

Don't panic yet. Most women who fail the first test, go on to pass the 3 hour test. But obviously some don't (like me).

Here the three hour test looks like this:

-fast for at least 10 hours before
-go to lab, they take a base line blood test
-drink this very sweet orange drink (tastes like orange pop with extra sugar)
-go and sit in labs waiting room. No moving allowed. Just sit. Take a good book, or some knitting, or your laptop, or something - ANYTHIING to do.
-1 hour later get blood drawn.
-go back and sit in lab waiting room and resume non-moving activity
-1 hour after that get blood drawn.
-go back and resume non-moving activity
-1 hour after that get blood drawn a third time.
-leave, eat breakfast, and fret over results.

I took some cheese and crackers to the lab to eat immediately afterwards. I was really shaky, and not feeling well with no food.

Also, even if you fail this test (which I doubt) having gestational diabetes does not necessarily mean you need to be induced, or that you will have to have a c-section. AT all. Feel free to put a note on my blog and I'll give you my real email and we can chat about it more if you like. Most women with GD are able to have a vaginal delivery with no induction.

But like Genkicat said- most people that fail the first pass the 3 hour test. Will cross fingers for you!

Stay calm. Easier said than done, I know. Sending good vibes that all goes well with this next test. Keep enjoying your pregnancy and that little Birdie :)

Many people fail the first test and then pass the second one. Cheer up! If you control your sugar intake, you can have a safe birth! Take it easy!

I hope you're one of the ones who pass the second test and that all is well.

Try not to panic. Like Genkicat sad, most people who have problems with the one hour pass the three hour test with flying colors. The important thing is that if there is a problem, you and your OB will know and be able to take care of it. {{{Hugs}}} and good luck.

I'm sorry you failed!! I felt the same way you do right now. What was your number? it was probably because of the apple you ate earlier. Since it does have sugar. I was told to fast for 12 hours. The 3 hour one is so boring and so long. You'll have a blood draw before you drink the glucose stuff and then you'll have to drink twice as much as you did before. Then you'll have 3 more blood draws.
My nurse told me, you should eat 6 small heathly meals a day. Especially the day before the 1 hour test because it helps your body digest food faster. Since I didn't eat 6 small meals before the test she told me I would fail and would have to do the 3 hour and she was right.

I took an office poll when I was getting ready for the glucose test, turns out of the 4 women I asked, 3 of them failed the 1 hour but passed the 3 hour. And then I failed the 1 hour and passed the 3 hour. I don't know why they even bother with the 1 hour test anymore. Like we need to hear we 'failed' at something.
